How to Install WordPress on Mac Using MAMP

I have already shown several tutorials on this blog about how to install WordPress on your computer so that you can develop locally. In past articles, I showed how to do this on the pc using various open source software that exists in the market.

In this article, I intend to continue showing how to do this, but this time using the mac. This will benefit those who use the Mac in their day to day lives. Installing WordPress on Mac is possible using three different software that can also be used in Windows. Which I have already shown and here.

However, for this tutorial I will show how it is done using MAMP.
What is necessary
  • MAMP
  • WordPress
  • Create Database
Let's start by downloading MAMP and installing it on your computer. To do so, visit the MAMP website at this link. The software is free and comes with a trial version of PRO.

After downloading the MAMP we will install on a mac, so follow these steps:

Click the link that says "continue" to proceed.

Click the link to continue ...

MAMP only has two languages that are English and German, so you will have to select between the two languages and then agree to the license terms and continue with the installation.

At this step your mac will prompt you to enter your password in order to allow software installation. This is a normal mac process, enter your password and click the link to install the software.

After selecting where you want to install MAMP, just continue with the installation and proceed to the next step.

And finally you will get the message that the installation was successful, you only have to close the window.

Create Database

To access the MAMP panel and create your database and install WordPress, you will need to visit the applications area on your computer and click on the MAMP item that appears there after the installation.

After clicking on MAMP will open the panel of MAMP, from here you can now access your browser to create your database and install WordPress. Click where it says "Open WebStart Page", this will open MAMP in your browser.

And then you have the welcome message from MAMP saying that the software has successfully installed. Here on this page,e you have a lot of information about MAMP, especially the version of the software you are using, as well as data about the MAMP server. This information is important because it is required when filling out the information in your WordPress database.

To create the database you have to click on the "Tools" link and select phpMyAdmin.

Then the phpMyAdmin page will open where you should create your database. So, create your database on this page, and proceed to the next step that is installing WordPress on your Mac.

Install WordPress

To install WordPress in MAMP first you will have to download the WordPress folder here, and then unpack and put the folder with all the WP files in htdocs. To locate the htdocs in MAMP, visit applications on the Mac and click the MAMP folder. In this folder locate the htdocs and insert the WordPress folder there.

In my htdocs, I have several project folders there that I'm working on.

You can change the WordPress name to any other name you like if you prefer. After doing so visit the "My WebSite in your browser" link

By clicking on this link you will be able to see the WordPress folder that you just placed there. In my case I have several folders there, that's why three appear. If you do not put anything in htdocs, this page will appear empty.

The next step is to click on the WordPress folder to start with the installation of it. Click the folder containing the WordPress files, you will be presented with a page with an error so that you can configure the information in your database. Click the link to continue to the next step.

On the next page,e, you will need to enter the database information you created in one of the previous steps.

Replace the information contained therein with the information in your database.

Database name: name of your database;
Username: root
Password: root

Database server : localhost: 3306
The prefixrefix of tables: wp_

You will then be redirected to a new page where you will have to fill in the data for your new site.

Then just fill out the form with your data.

And welcome to your WordPress dashboard, you have successfully installed WP on your Mac. Now you can start creating WordPress sites in the comfort of your computer without having to be connected to the internet.
